Over 1,300 homes, farms and business near Emyvale can connect to high-speed broadband now
A €5 million investment by the Government of Ireland is transforming life and work for more than 1,300 homes, farms and businesses near Emyvale in north Monaghan, including the Waller family who say high-speed broadband has been a game changer for both their busy household and their farm.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), visited the area this week to meet the Waller family, who have been connected to the NBI network since 2021.
Matthew Waller said: “There are 11 people living in the house and since we’ve had the NBI network, we’ve all had instant access to the internet, so it definitely keeps the house quiet.
“Before, we were on the copper line and when the peak times hit, whatever you needed the most, you couldn’t get the service. Since we got broadband through NBI in 2021, we’ve had a stable, super-fast connection, and it’s one thing now we don’t have to worry about at all.”
His brother Stewart, who runs the family farm said: “As a young farmer, I think it’s a huge benefit taking technology into the business. It keeps a tight eye on things, and it brings more profitability into the farm as well. I installed a heat detection rumination system, and it works brilliantly with the Wi-Fi speeds NBI has produced. It saves time, especially through breeding season.”
Tara Collins, Chief Marketing Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “We’re seeing incredible demand for high-speed broadband across rural Ireland and Emyvale is a great example of what’s possible when world-class connectivity arrives in communities.
“In Monaghan, we will connect 16,000 premises overall, and 75% of those are already ready to connect, including 4,500 homes, businesses and farms near Monaghan town, and 3,100 in the surrounds of Carrickmacross.
“Take-up rates in Emyvale are particularly encouraging, with almost 50% of premises in the rollout area already connected. It’s fantastic to see the positive impact that the State’s investment in broadband is delivering for families like the Wallers, and we want many more to experience those benefits too. I’d encourage people living and working in rural areas across Monaghan to check their Eircode on nbi.ie and place an order today to get connected to fast, reliable fibre broadband.”
As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell fibre broadband directly to end users, rather it enables services from a range of broadband providers or Retail Service Providers (RSPs). NBI will make the new Fibre-to-the-Home network available to all RSPs operating in the Intervention Area.
Over 71 providers have already signed up to sell services on the National Broadband Ireland network today. To see the retail broadband providers that are currently licensed to sell on the National Broadband Ireland network, visit NBI.ie/buy.
Under the National Broadband Plan, 564,000 premises nationwide are included in the Intervention Area, which was established by the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications to identify areas where commercial operators are not currently providing or intending to provide access to high-speed broadband.
