1,500 homes, businesses and farms near Ballyheigue will soon be ready to connect to fibre broadband on National Broadband Ireland network
High-speed connectivity also on the way in Kilgarvan and Castlegregory deployment areas of county as almost 3,000 premises see build works begin
Over 6,000 homes, businesses and farms in Kerry can avail of a high-speed connection today
National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) today announced that construction has commenced to deliver high-speed broadband to almost 3,000 premises in the Kilgarvan and Castlegregory deployment areas and almost 1,500 premises in the Ballyheigue deployment area will soon be able order or pre-order a high-speed fibre broadband connection on its network.
In Kerry, there are approximately 27,000 premises in the Intervention Area (IA), which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools. Under the National Broadband Plan, County Kerry will see an investment of €107M in the new high speed fibre network. This will enable e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and facilitate increased levels of remote working.
There are also 1,498 Kerry homes, businesses and farms in the Ballyheigue deployment area that will soon be able to join the National Broadband Ireland network in the coming months.
Having successfully completed the Survey and Design phase of the project, 2,082 Kerry premises in the Kilgarvan deployment area are now under construction to have high-speed fibre delivered and a further 858 premises in the Castlegregory deployment area of the county also have build works underway. Both areas will be ready to connect to National Broadband Ireland’s network later this year.
National Broadband Ireland’s website is regularly updated to show estimated connection dates. Signing up to the NBI email notifications at /eoi/ is the easiest way to get the most up to date status of premises during the rollout and when premises will be ready for order.
Works have already been completed in other parts of Kerry and there are 6,466 premises that are available to order or pre-order high-speed, reliable broadband in the Killarney and Tralee Deployment Areas, with 1,593 connections already made to the network. National Broadband Ireland is calling on people to visit nbi.ie/map/ and enter their Eircode to see if they are ready to connect.
Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “Our teams continue to work on the rollout plan and substantial progress has been made on works in Kerry.”
He continued: “We are confident that the rollout will continue to gather pace as our ability to move premises from the construction phase to the order phase ramps up. We are currently working closely with retail service providers, and other stakeholders, to connect homes in Kerry. Minimum speeds of 500Mbps will be available.
“Our mission is to end the digital divide across the country. Digital connectivity is critical to many of our activities, and this new Fibre-to-the-Home network, will be a key enabler for the sustainability of local businesses and communities.”
Under the National Broadband Plan, 559,000 premises nationwide are included in the Intervention Area, which was established by the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications to identify areas where commercial operators are not currently providing access to high-speed broadband or do not intend to.
