NBI joins over 110 of Ireland’s Top Companies Dedicated to Sustainable Business Practices
National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high speed fibre broadband network as part of the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has recently joined Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI), the leading advisers on sustainability and corporate social responsibility in Ireland. This development marks the latest step by National Broadband Ireland to ensure it is working in a sustainable way, and to help to contribute to society through CSR activities.
National Broadband Ireland hopes to continue to build upon its work in the areas of environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The company recently announced a partnership with Grow Remote to collaborate on initiatives to empower people to work remotely and encourage sustainable community development.
The NBP is the largest ever telecommunications project ever undertaken by the Irish State and will include a Fibre-to-the-Home network connecting over 1.1 million people across 544,000 premises including homes, businesses, farms and schools. It aims to radically transform the country’s broadband landscape through the delivery of quality, affordable high-speed broadband to all parts of Ireland where such services are not available commercially. Once completed, all parts of Ireland will have access to a modern and reliable broadband network, capable of supporting the communications, information, education and entertainment requirements of current and future generations.
David McCourt, Chairman of National Broadband Ireland said “NBI believes that better broadband networks promote social progress, equality and sustainability in rural communities across Ireland. The National Broadband Plan will provide access to local, national and global opportunity. Every person, community and organisation in Ireland will be empowered to achieve more.
While we are working to complete this important project, which will help to progress the country socially and economically, it is important to also ensure that NBI is acting in a way which is progressive and sustainable. Joining Business in the Community Ireland is a positive step in this regard, which will help us to ensure we are acting as a responsible company, in the best interest of society”.
Welcoming NBI to the network, Tomás Sercovich, CEO of BITCI stated: “We are delighted to be welcoming National Broadband Ireland to BITCI’s network and commend them for taking this step so early in their corporate development. We will work with NBI to anticipate and be ready to meet the current, pressing challenges of climate change, the pipeline of talent as well as the issues of social inclusion, diversity and accountability. Business reputation has been firmly in the spotlight for the last few years, so the uptake in membership of the network demonstrates that companies are still focused on transforming their businesses in order to have a positive impact on society..”
BITCI’s mission is to inspire and enable businesses to bring about a sustainable, low carbon economy and a more inclusive society where everyone thrives. The organisation counts over 100 of Ireland’s top companies as members, including Eir, Sky and Vodafone, who are listed as retail broadband service providers that are certified to sell NBI network services.
