Homes, businesses and farms in Letterkenny region and nearby townlands and villages such as Edenacarnan, Rathmelton and Temple Douglas are ready to connect to fibre broadband today 

Broadband network under construction in Creeslough deployment area to connect further 2,700 premises in coming months

National Broadband Ireland, the company delivering the new future-proofed, high-speed Fibre-to-the-Home network under the National Broadband Plan on behalf of the Government, has said that over 3,000 premises near Letterkenny can get a high-speed fibre broadband connection on its network today.

There are 3,105 premises in the Letterkenny deployment areas that can join the National Broadband Ireland network. National Broadband Ireland is calling on people living near Letterkenny to visit nbi.ie/map/ and enter their Eircode to see if they are ready to connect.

Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: “Homes and businesses in the rural surrounds of Letterkenny are the first parts of Donegal that can connect to National Broadband Ireland’s high-speed network. 

“We know that broadband is a crucial utility for people and our message for those who are waiting for a connection is that the rollout is coming and we will make additional progress in Donegal over the coming months.

There are 2,708 premises in the Creeslough deployment area that are now under construction to have high-speed fibre delivered in the coming months having successfully completed the Survey and Design phase of the project.

33,000 premises in County Donegal are included in the State’s Intervention Area, which will see NBI deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms, and schools. As the biggest investment in rural Ireland since rural electrification, County Donegal will receive €128m of Government investment under the National Broadband Plan. 

Peter Hendrick added: “People in Donegal can see if they are included in the rollout by checking their Eircode on www.nbi.ie and they can also register to keep up-to-date on our progress in their area.

“There is also information available on the location of people’s nearest Broadband Connection Points, which are crucial for connecting rural communities in advance of the rollout.”

National Broadband Ireland’s website is regularly updated to show estimated connection dates. Signing up to the NBI email notifications at /eoi/ is the easiest way to get the most up to date status of premises during the rollout and when premises will be ready for order. 

As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell fibre broadband directly to end users, rather it enables services from a range of broadband providers or Retail Service Providers (RSPs). As a wholesale provider, NBI will make the new Fibre-to-the-Home network available to all RSPs operating in the Intervention Area.   

Some 61 RSPs have already signed up to sell services on the National Broadband Ireland network and 48 are certified as ready to start providing connections as of today. National Broadband Ireland contractors have been on the ground across the country and over 126,806 premises nationwide are available to order broadband on the NBI network so far.

Broadband Connection Points

In advance of the Fibre-to-the-Home rollout, the NBP provides for the delivery of Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) nationwide. 602 of these sites, including Public BCPs, are now ‘live’. Public BCPs – which include sports clubs, community centres and tourist sites – will provide free public access to high-speed internet in the rollout area. Other BCP categories include schools and marts. BCPs will pave the way for rural communities to receive the benefits of broadband, from mobile working, e-learning and mobile banking, to digital tourism. You can view BCPs at /bcp-map/. An example of some of the locations of Broadband Connection Points in Donegal include Carrowmenagh Community Centre, Leghowney Community Centre and Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair. Primary schools in the Intervention Area are also being connected for educational access as part of the NBP.
